One minor point onScott Horton's FAQ on pre-dinosaur history:
true "mammoths" (Mammuthus, sp.) actually fit into the last interval
(2My-present).  Numerous mastodonts, gomphotheres and other proboscideans goe
back to the Miocene, but not the elephants we call mammoths.
