I was thinking of that very reference myself!  I had a quick look for it
this morning and couldn't find it.  I seem to remember that it was some
kind of fish rather than a mammoth though.  I think it is in the
introduction or the first chapter of Volume 1 of _The Gulag Archipelago_.
