Right! But sometimes the original fossil is destroyed in a bombing raid on
Munich in 1944, as happened to the type material of _Spinosaurus_,
_Bahariasaurus_, and _Aegyptosaurus_ (to name three). Or it's just plain lost
(as happens too often to mention). Then the printed record is all we have
left.

Stone tablets have the virtue of permanence, but public dissemination in
multiple copies might be a problem.
