As I understand it, the "modern synthesis" of evolutionary theory is
still pretty much intact. I don't believe even punctuated equilibrium
has displaced Darwin. I think Niles Eldridge and Stephen J. Gould 
would agree that Darwin's initial thesis is still very strong, and
THE central unifying principle in biology today.
