Hey, hey, slow down there!

There are many differences between monitor lizards, crocs, ratites,
and mammals besides oviparity/viviparity!

For instance, perhaps your general rule should be "mammals do better
in the big-animal, open-field niche(s) than sprawling ectotherms or
big, armless, toothless bipeds!"
