The comment that diplodocids may have held their necks aloft to avoid
predation is just the sort of idel speculation that has hindered
understanding sauropod function. Stick to the anatomy. The neck base
vertebrae of diplodocids will only articulate in a horizontal posture.
Conversely, the neck bases of many other sauropods articulate with a
pronounced upwards kink, even though some desire sauropods to have low held
necks.
