I think that these really egregious errors were intentional. They were
Spielberg's way of paying cinematic homage to all the stupid humans in
monster movies of yore. Some less obvious errors, like carrying rifles
muzzle end up in a driving rainstorm, may have been genuine slipups.
"Dammit, Philbert; what kind of a lepidopterist are you? For god's
man; stand up to them!"
