Montana fossil fight



The latest issue of New Scientist has my report on the controversy over the
T. rex Keith Rigby discovered on a Montana ranch. The ranchers did take a
few bones (notably the dentaries), but later returned them with minimal
damage. Rigby plans to go out to complete the excavation this fall; he may
already be on his way. He believes the T. rex is part of a big dinosaur
bone bed that includes other late Cretaceous dinosaurs; the bones are in
the Hell Creek Formation. The discovery is on a ranch which the former
owners signed over to the Farm Service Agency after defaulting on loans, so
it's pretty clearly federal land. For more details, see the New Scientist
