It's not true that people don't _look_ for pre-KT mammals. For example,
Rich Cifelli of the University of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma State Museum is
Norman has been screening Utah deposits for mammal remains for years, and
has built up an impressive collection. Most of the fossils are teeth, and
certainly not as spectacular as a good dinosaur skeleton, but some people
are looking.

What seems to be missing are well-preserved fossils from sites equivalent
to the Liaoning deposits in China which have yielded the spectacular bird
fossils. This is important for _all_ small animals, not just mammals.
