And in the Precambrian, too, I suppose? Times change, new behaviors evolve. 
Uniformitarianism certainly doesn't apply here. (How would you show how that 
it does?)

Who says fighting over food is waste of energy? You could well double your 
portion of the kill. You have, of course, measured caloric intake in fighting 
versus non-fighting situations?
