Kemp's Mammal-Like Reptiles was an excellent recommendation -- synapsids
were the dominant vertebrates on land prior to the rise of the archosaurs.

If more detail was required, I would suggest The Dicynodonts: a Study in
Palaeobiology. Author Gillian King describes her book as a "kind of
Michelin Guide to...the commonest group of therapsids". Lots of detail but
certainly accessible to an undergrad.

If a quick intro reference is needed, perhaps Michael J. Benton's
Vertebrate Palaeontology? Many chapters are relevant to your query although
it is now 10 years old.
