T. rex and the Crater of Doom
Dr. Walter Alvarez
March 8, 1999
Carnegie Lecture Hall, 4:30 pm

What caused the extinction of the dinosaurs? Dr. Walter Alvarez will reveal the
solution to the greatest scientific murder mystery of all time in a special
lecture, T. rex and the Crater of Doom, on Monday, March 8, at 4:30 pm in the
Carnegie Lecture Hall.

For years, Dr. Alvarez and his colleagues have worked to prove that a massive
comet or asteroid struck the Earth, killing much of its animal and plant life.
The discovery of a giant impact crater on Central America's Yucatan Peninsula
confirmed that 65 million years ago a body from space larger than Mount Everest
slammed into the Earth. This collision caused an explosion equal to the
detonation of a hundred million hydrogen bombs. Dr. Alvarez's talk will take us
back in time to the day the dinosaurs died and the Mesozoic world ended.

Walter Alvarez, author of the book T. rex and the Crater of Doom, is a
professor of geology and geophysics at the University of California at
Berkeley. He is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union and a member of the
Royal Danish Academy of Sciences. He was elected to the National Academy of
Sciences in 1991.

The lecture, presented by the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and Carnegie
Mellon University, is free and open to the public. For more information about
