Actually, recent research at paleolithic sites in northeastern North America
suggest that humans stored meat by submerging it in glacial lakes to
preserve it.  One researcher even replicated the event by storing horsemeat
underwater through the summer and successfully cooking and eating it in the
fall. Not that I'd recommend that.....
