You keep forgetting: bracken fern is every bit as good as grass for hiding.

increases in the latter part of the Cretaceous: from specialized
insectivorous to omnivorous types.

Among *mammals*. This completely ignores the non-mammalian egg predators, which may have been more diverse prior to the Tertiary.
