Begone, thy filthy mob! (was Benton and Kinman)
I'd like to think, Tim, that you'd be one of those standing before
the door to reproach the mob. And ask them to prove that their
views are in any wise so much better that the remarkable and
still entirely useful old edifice should be destroyed.
You are correct, Mr Philidor. I would grab my trusty gladius, and instantly
rush to the defense of the Temple! I would stand shoulder-to-shoulder with
the trembling Priestess of Isis and proclaim: "Though I do not worship Isis,
and do not follow her creed, I admire the architectural beauty of her
Temple. I beg of you, do not tear this building down!" I would make
Voltaire proud (eighteen centuries later).
So too, the Linnaean System is a beautiful think to behold. But it was
founded upon an outdated and flawed philosophy. It deserves pride of place
in history - but not in the present.
