My take is that the pronunciation (or not) depends on the place of "pt" in
the word.  Sometimes the P is silent - like in a children's swimming pool.

OK, bad joke.  But seriously, if "pt" begins a word then the P is silent -
like ptarmigan, pterygium, pterodactyl etc.  

On the other hand, if "pt" is within a word (and so almost certainly
preceded by a vowel), then the P is pronounced - as in helicopter,
_Archaeopteryx_, _Apteryx_ etc.
