MUSEUM OF WESTERN COLORADO
Paleontology Technician opening

The Museum of Western Colorado has an opening for a Paleontology Technician
for 20 weeks during the summer of 2004 (~May 10-September 24). The main
responsibilities for the position include operation of the Mygatt-Moore
Quarry under the direction of the Curator, preparing site and field tools,
introducing clients to tools and techniques of excavation, mapping and
numbering material in field, preparing material in lab, and assisting with
various other lab, collections, and field projects as needed. Position is
contingent upon funding.

The Mygatt-Moore Quarry is a large Late Jurassic age dinosaur quarry in the
Morrison Formation of western Colorado and has been worked for nearly twenty
years. The site is particularly rich in Apatosaurus and Allosaurus material
but has yielded the type and most of the referred bones of the polacanthid
Mymoorapelta. The site is seventeen miles west of the Museum in Fruita,
just off Interstate 70. Museum crews also work several other sites in the
Morrison Formation of western Colorado during the late spring to early fall
months.

Qualifications: Demonstrated ability to carefully excavate, jacket, and
remove small to very large vertebrate bones; experience mapping and
cataloging vertebrate material; interest and experience in working with
public and children; must have own transportation.

Pay is $320/week, plus camp trailer housing.
