Some new dino references



Greetings!

Some new dinosaur related publications appeared recently (apologies if
some have mentioned before):

1. Maisch, M. W., Matzke, A. T., Pfretzschner, H.-U., Ge Sun, Stöhr, H.
& Grossmann, F. (2003): Fossil vertebrates from the Middle and Upper
Jurassic of the Southern Junggar Basin (NW China) - results of the
Sino-German Expeditions 1999-2000. - Neues Jahrbuch für Geologie und
Paläontologie, Monatshefte, 2003 (5): 297-313, 7 figs.; Stuttgart (E.
Schweizerbart).

A diverse freshwater vertebrate assemblage (as usual: fishes,
amphibians, turtles, crocodyles) is found SW of Urumchi (NW China,
Xinjiang) in the Toutunhe Formation (from it Tianchisaurus was described
by Dong 1993) and the overlying Qigu Formation. Dinosaur remains from
the Toutunhe Formation include an isolated tooth crown (Carnosauria gen.
et sp. indet.), an incomplete fibula (Ceratosauria indet.), fragments of
ribs and ?osteoderms (Dinosauria indet., prrobably thyreophoran). In the
Qigu Formation incomplete neural arch and distal end of rib and several
bone fragments of an indeterminate sauropod were found.


2. Heckert, A. B., Lucas, S. G. & Krzyzanowski, S. E. (2003): Vertebrate
fauna of the late Campanian (Judithian) Fort Crittenden Formation, and
the age of Cretaceous vertebrate faunas of southeastern Arizona (USA). -
Neues Jahrbuch für Geologie und Paläontologie, Abhandlungen, 227 (3):
343-364, 5 figs.; Stuttgart (E. Schweizerbart). (3.2003).

Fragments of hadrosaurs and ceratopsian bones (figured), mainly teeth of
tyrannosaurids, dromaeosaurids (reinterpreted from Ratkevich & Duffek
1996), a vertebra of a titanosaurid (McCord 1997), also remains of
fishes, turtles, and crocodiles from the lower shale member of the Fort
Crittenden Formation (late Campanian). Other Arizona finds discussed
(Tenontosaurus, Sonorasaurus).


3. de Souza Bittencourt, J. & Kellner, A. W. A. (2002): Abelisauria
(Theropoda, Dinosauria) teeth from Brazil. - Boletim do Museo nacional,
nova série, Geologia, 63: 8 pp., 3 figs.; Rio de Janeiro (Museo
Nacional, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro). (11.7.2002).

Details of tooth structure of teeth from an incomplete skeleton (DGM
859-R) described and compared to other theropods.


4. Trotta, M. N. F., Campos, D. de A., Kellner, A. W. A. (2002): Unusual
caudal vertebral centra of a titanosaurid (Dinosauria, Sauropoda) from
the continental Upper Cretaceous of Brazil. - Boletim do Museo nacional,
nova série, Geologia, 64: 11 pp., 5 figs.; Rio de Janeiro (Museo
Nacional, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro). (27.9.2002).

An incomplete series of 8 posterior caudals of one specimen (DGM 497-R)
from the Bauru Group shows procoelous, amphicoelous, and biconvex and
other morphological varieties in a single titanosaurid tail. This shows
that the morphology of isolated caudals may not characterize different
titanosaurid taxa.

As title says. Dinosaurs not specifically mentioned, but extensive

More than 30 vertebrate species, including 4 fishes, 1 frog,
tritylodontids (> 150 teeth) [!!!], 3 turtles, (?) 3 pterosaurs, 7
dinosaurs (teeth; 2 [but 1 = pterosaur ?] sauropods, 3 theropods, 2
ornithopods), 7 lizards, 1 choristodere, 1 bird, 2 mammals. Many
specimens figured.


7. Perea, D., Ubilla, M. & Rojas, A. (2003): First report of theropods
from the Tacuarembó Formation (late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous), Uruguay.

7 isolated theropod teeth from the Tacuarembó Formation (from here
Tacuarembovum Mones, 1980, i. e. eggs; age: fish correlation).
