One More Bit Of Quake Trivia

This week's earthquake in the Indian Ocean was so massive that it roiled
the water in test wells in Missouri, state geologists said.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources maintains a network of 73
groundwater observation wells in 50 counties across the state. The wells
measure and record the depth of groundwater in many aquifers to see how
the water level changes over time.

The quake Sunday off the coast of northern Sumatra sent shock waves around
the globe, causing fluctuations in groundwater. Most changes were small,
but there was an 8.5-inch variation in the water in the well in Aurora, in
Lawrence County in southwestern Missouri.
