Actually, they are feathers, just not flight feathers or down. Feathers
come in a bewildering array of shapes and sizes (and functions).

Actually, you are already there!! The DML is a great source for links to
breaking news in paleontology: there are enough people on here with enough
fingers in different media pies (as it were) that announcements of papers,
press releases, and so forth happen here pretty early.
