I've heard the flamingo put forward. The traditional shape (especially
of the beak and wings) is similar, as is the pinky-red colouring. But
the main claim on the title is that flamingos apparently gather in hot
volcanic springs where no other bird tends to go, so they'd be seen
heading for volcanos and appearing out of the smoke and steam.
