wouldn't it be best to simply put a Latin ending on his *original* name? (not on the name he coined for himself).

Linnaeus was his original name. He was given the name Carl Linnaeus at his birth, by his parents. He became Carl von Linné much later, upon being admitted into the ranks of the Swedish nobility.
