That is the job of Alan's reviewers and his journal editor.  So, what is
THEIR excuse?

But why bother publishing such a deception in the first place?  Alan is a
true puzzle.  Time is against him.  His tactic (if it is indeed a tactic)
is akin to rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.  In the long run,
the energy expended in the exercise won't matter.

Either Alan is adept at avoiding peer reviewed venues for his pubs, or he
gets "soft pitch" reviews from his cronies and free passes from spineless
editors.

In contrast, if a first-time author straight out of grad school ever
tried to confuse the distinction between "ancestor" and "sister taxon",
he/she would be (justifiably) ripped apart by his/her reviewers.
