Considering the L/D ratio and consequent Euler buckling, what was the mechanism by which they did that, if stiffened muscle tissue?

This has not been shown in print, but was part of an abstract that suggested
that the 'fibrils were stiffened muscle fibers that could contract the chord.
They would have still functioned as stiffening structures in the membrane
chordwise closer to the body where they were more parallel, and spanwise where
they more-paralleled the chord.
