There is though, in the respiratory system.  The throat forms a dead
air column, which gets reprocessed during the next breath and reduces
the oxygen content in the lungs while increasing the carbon dioxide
content. In long throats, this would be a measurable difference.

Wouldn't that require a _very_ long windpipe? Isn't the dead air in the throat completely expelled when the bird exhales?
