dwindling to extinction

This is a quote from an article about beetles predating dinosaurs by 70
million years. No problem with that. Let the DNA speak...but DWINDLING to
extinction. Who says? I didn't think that was still a viable speculation.

"Unlike the dinosaurs which dwindled to extinction, beetles survived because
of their ecological diversity and adaptability," said the study's lead
scientist Alfried Vogler, an entomologist at Imperial College London and the
Natural History Museum in London.
