Arguably it hasn't quite failed yet. Being (primarily) terrestrial and carnivorous is plesiomorphic for phorusrachids--those conditions are common to other _Cariamae_ as well, including extant seriemas. (Although you could quibble over whether seriemas are "large".) -- Mike Keesey
