I'm well aware of the Wrangel subspecies (and the Catalina dwarf
Columbian mammoths, and the Mediterranean and Indonesian pygmy
elephants, etc).

I was referring to the "classic" large form - the kind that was
actually responsible for the major ecological modification of large
areas of Eurasia and North America, and the kind that has been most
famously been found frozen whole to provide DNA samples. (And the kind
that provided more meat to ancient hunters, for that matter.)
