Why do ecologists generally regard northern Africa as "Palearctic" (see
the map at http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/73/Ecozones.png)
instead of "Afrotropical" like the rest of the continent?
Yes, it's transitional, and transitional zones are usually not recognized at
all. The decision seems to be commonly made on the basis of the salamanders
and bears in the Atlas and things like that.
Gazelles, leopards and lions are not limited to Africa.
