Birds have "thumb" genes like alligators: free pdf

In case this item has not been mentioned, a new study of 
alligator digits adds weight to theory that a "hometic 
frameshift" occurred in birds, so that wing fingers one, 
two and three shifted to the embryological positions of 
fingers two, three and four.
