As David says, these directions are associated with winds and the deities that 
personified them in Roman mythology:

Northeast: Caecius
Southeast: Apeliotus
Southwest: Africus (or more prosaically, Afer ventus - "African wind" - since 
Africa lay to the SW of Italy).
