The early explorers who named it knew plenty about navigation and
sailing, but sweet FA about biology. They couldn't tell an alligator
from a crocodile.

Incidentally, the word 'alligator' itself comes from the Spanish term
for 'lizard'. People who live in the northern parts of Australia often
refer to crocs colloquially as 'lizards', so it seems the name Alligator
River has in one sense come full-circle (even if it's a full-circle of
inappropriateness).
