Sprawling hind limbs may not have worked for early birds, but did work for 
Sharovipteryx and early pterosaurs, sprawlers that they were...

Interesting side note: moving into Anurognathids and Dimorphodon you get a nice 
nearly 90º angle on that femoral head, likely precluding a complete sprawl, but 
producing something akin to an inverted Beechcraft Bonanza V-tail ruddervator.
