Except for the Yapok (Chironectes minimus)!

IIUC, the baby yapok simply holds its breath when underwater. That's
fine for short aquatic excursions, but wouldn't do for a marsupial
whale.

The Yapok (male or female--males pouch their genitals while swimming) will use muscles to seal the rear-facing pouch while swimming for up to 10 minutes. The young apparently don't need to breathe much.

Anyway, you are correct, it wouldn't be much use as-is for becoming a whale-possum.
