To be fair, it is quite possible that there were bristles on
protodinosaurs like Eodromaeus. They are present in Tianyulong, which
is even less derived compared to birds, and even pterosaurs had fuzzy
integument. Personally, I don't find it that big a leap to suggest
that downy integument was present in the earliest dinosaurs.
